WALLEYE

*Pokegama Guide Service suggests all big walleyes (25"+), that are not going to the taxidermist be photographed, measured, weighed, and released.

What to Expect

Walleyes and Smallmouth are commonly caught on similar spots but rarely together. The walleye fishing on Pokegama really heats up around memorial weekend, continuing thru June and July. The first couple of weeks of the season can be the toughest of the year.

The first warm weather with water temperatures in the low fifties sparks the beginning of good fishing. Large walleyes show up on classic spots and are very susceptible to a live bait rig or jig. Barring any massive cold front, fishing is remarkably consistent. A milk-run approach is used, looking at several spots until fish are found. Live bait rigs, jigs, crankbaits, and soft plastics can all be effective.

August and September fishing for walleyes during daylight hours, can be a bit more challenging, although good catches will occur. The best fishing takes place at night with crankbaits. The fall night-bite can be incredible, for numbers and size. Long-line trolling minnowbaits is the method of choice. Efforts should be focused during the full moon periods of August, September, and October. The pains associated with late nights and sleep deprivation are soon forgotten when the fish are biting.
