SMALLMOUTH

*Pokegama Guide Service requests that all smallmouth that are not going to the taxidermist be photographed, measured, weighed, and released.

What to Expect
For this angler, smallmouth are the most exciting and most frustrating fish that swims. I have consistently caught big bass for a month only to go cold for a week, catching absolutely nothing, although live-bait will always turn a few.
Fishing success varies greatly during the course of the spring season.

In the spring, stable warm weather with high winds brings the best fishing. The amount of life that collects on main-lake points and in-side turns after three days of wind, is incredible. Fish are taken on top-water, jigs of all kinds, crankbaits and of course live-bait. Fishing is done on the edges of shallow flats adjacent to spawning areas. Pokegama Guide Service does not sight fish for bedding bass, concentrating on the walleye bite, which should be in high gear.

The most consistent fishing takes place from July through September. Smallmouth are set-up on classic spots like main lake points, humps, and green cabbage, and the open-water associated with these areas. Soft plastics, crankbaits, and live-bait are used. A milk-run approach is used to catch a fish or two from many spots, accumulating a good catch.

As Summer progresses into Fall, bass abandon most summer haunts and group in very tight schools in 'relatively' predictable locations. Finding these schools can at times be time consuming but very rewarding. It is not uncommon to go fishless for hours only to catch 20lbs. of bass in an hour. One of these schools was found last year and provided three hours of the fastest smallmouth fishing I have ever seen. The school was fifty yards long and every mark on the depthfinder was a boated fish. The weather changed and the fish fell off the radar.
Welcome to smallmouth!!!!!
